Talk like a pirate day, it be.

Avast! Any geek blog that fails to mention talk like a pirate day is strung up from the nearest yard arm. I don’t want my timbers shivered so I be doin’ my part.

A full day of passwords

I ended up spending the entire day at work today working on a system to let users of our app change their passwords. The complicated bit was the wide number of user types that the system has. Accounting for all of them was a bit of a pain. The script to let users change their passwords when they remember their existing passwords was simple enough, it only took a few hours. Changing forgotten passwords was what took the most time since all the passwords are 1 way encrypted and salted. That meant using an email verification step to confirm the user’s identity before allowing them to change their password.

And to top it all of I’m not completely done yet. All the functionality is in place but I still need to so some cleanup, some prettying up, and a little bit better identification.

Tomorrow should be a bit better, but who knows. It hasn’t been a goog week for me and PHP. But after work tomorrow is a poker game, and Saturday is Oktoberfest.

Torgie’s Game

In an early prototype for a display feature on our new app one of our Programmers, Torgie, came up with this little gem.

I know it isn’t much, but to the fever minds of a bunch of guys who were working 10 – 12 hour days this was the greatest game of all time! What made it even better was the bug easter-egg of what heppens when you double click the toss button.

The current working version of this script is a good deal fancier, and it lacks the feature easter-egg (which still makes me a little sad).

Alpha… more or less

As of 7pm last Friday we had a working alpha version of our application. By 9:30 this morning we had a broken pre-alpha version of our app. Basically some of our testing revealed a weakness in a small part of our SQL design. By 4 we were up and running again. Q and A offically starts tomorrow. Then we get into the meat and potatos of things.

As soon as a remember to bring things home from work or find time to write a post from work I have a “game” to share.

66 hours

I pretty much disappeared from the net last week because my team and I were in the middle of a big push to get our app into alpha. We succeeded, but it meant putting in close to 70 hours at work last week. Frankly it wouldn’t have been too bad except that it was coming at the end of a very busy month and a half. This holiday weekend will be my first real down time in about 5 weeks. Next week Q and A starts.

I’ve got a couple stories saved up so stay tuned.
